When you should see a gynecologist for the first time
Whether it’s a parent or a young person asking, I love answering…
Sarah Fausel, MD is an obstetrician/gynecologist with Women's Healthcare Associates in Portland, Oregon
“Many people I see don’t have a great understanding of their bodies or physiology and have questions or concerns about something they’re experiencing. I want every person to come away feeling heard—that I listened, understood, and cared. I may not have all the answers, but I promise to take every question seriously and do my best to find them.”
Although she did not originally plan to go into medicine, after spending several years as a rowing coach Dr. Fausel returned to her childhood dream of becoming a doctor. She gravitated toward obstetrics and gynecology in medical school, enjoying the breadth of clinical and hospital practice, diversity of the patient population and privilege of being part of some of the most important moments in peoples’ lives. She especially enjoys working with adolescents and helping people of all ages consider their reproductive options, including contraceptive management. Dr. Fausel helps her patients address abnormal periods, sexual health, and pre-pregnancy planning —among other things. She enjoys caring for people during pregnancy and is experienced in managing pregnancy and labor complications, such as pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes and preterm premature rupture of membranes. She also provides transgender care, including some gender affirming surgery. Additionally, she enjoys and has significant experience in helping care for pregnant people with a history of substance use disorders.
Dr. Fausel’s passion for helping people understand their bodies inspired her to volunteer her time teaching sex education to young women in juvenile detention—an activity she hopes to return to someday. She also plans to continue advocating for improved maternal and female reproductive health outcomes on a local and national scale. When she is not working, Dr. Fausel loves the water, going to trivia night, spending time with her family and hiking with her dog, Ollie. As a native Oregonian, she enjoys wine and beer tasting and all local sports. She is excited to have the privilege to provide care to the people of her home state.

I was so impressed with the quality of care during this visit. I had a colposcopy and cervical biopsy which were very scary for me and I went in really nervous. Both the medical assistant and doctor were so sweet and kind, thorough in explaining things, and considerate in answering my questions in a digestible manner which really helped ease my nerves.
She was very thoughtful. Well informed. I am so happy to have found Dr. Sarah Fausel I really liked her as a Dr.
Doctor Fausel is always great at making me feel comfortable and cared for as a patient. She listens to any concerns I have and answers them without the feeling of like shame that can come from other doctor visits.
She was so friendly, calm and warm and took time to answer all of my questions and concerns! I also appreciated her knowledge and insight into what we talked about!
